CraeftUnion Design School

Currently, I am designing a School of Design on the 'Greens Windmill' site in Nottingham. I have chosen to focus my school around 3 courses: 1. Architecture, 2. Landscape Architecture and 3. Experimental Materials. I aim to convey these through the materials and design of the building on site, and I am currently looking into using thatch, charred timber, recycled glass and other unusual materials to incorporate the school's curriculum into the design.

My design focuses around the concept of going 'back to basics' and so the school will have on and off campus areas for live projects (similarly to Hooke Park) where students and members of the community, will come together to unite their knowledge of crafts.

There are many aspects of the design and curriculum which will involve the community such as Art classes run by students for young school children and Care home residents (Inspired by the social experiment 'Old peoples home for 4yr olds'). There are also 'sheds' on site to act as a workspace for elderly people who may be isolated, or just wanting to share their knowledge or socialise. These sheds will act as workspaces and will also be a hub of knowledge for students to visit and gain advice and teaching from.

On site will also be public spaces such as Markets, Small Businesses, a Library, Cafe, Art Gallery and the Experiential Pavilion I designed in my mini project in Term 1. These spaces will result in the site acting as an extension of Nottingham's Creative Quarter, drawing more people out of the inner city and into the greener areas surrounding. The total area is currently just below 4,000sq m.
