Pavilion mini-Project

An experiential pavilion based upon the concepts of 1. Absence and Presence, 2. Oscillations and 3. Transendence.

The design is for the Greens Windmill site in Nottingham which is also the site of my CraftUnion project. These three concepts were developed from looking at the works of Eduardo Chillida who was a Spanish Sculptor. From this I then created models for each concept and then drawings on A2 in a mix of digital and hand methods to then be combined into one final concept drawing. These involved looking at the site and context as well as the intended experience.

The final design I produced is a timber and canvas pavilion, dug into the retaining wall on the playground. The upper level is a calm space for organised musical performances whilst below, on the playground, is an interactive area for children that blends within the context of the playground. Many timber columns are placed rising from the floor and hanging from the ceiling in an Oscillating movement. Some columns are structural, supporting the upper floor, others are hollow and allow vocal interaction between floors whilst others are not fixed and can be moved by children and the wind, creating a wind chime effect.
